Abstract

Hoax (hoax) is now rife in the public, spread through print media, online media or social media. People easily believe lies and spread rumors and become viral. In this case the North Sumatra Regional Police must play a role in the investigation process of the perpetrators of the dissemination, given the high number of hoaxes spread in the North Sumatra Regional Police area which is detrimental or even creates hostility among the people. The problem in this research is how the efforts made by the North Sumatra Police in their role in processing the investigation of hoaxes and what are the factors inhibiting the North Sumatra Police in the process of investigating perpetrators of spreading hoax news, so that it is expected to reduce acts criminal hoaxes (hoaxes) that occur at this time. This type of research used in writing this thesis is Normative Juridical also known as field research. The location of the study was conducted at the North Sumatra Regional Police Special Criminal Directorate. With document data collection techniques and interviews, and field research (Field Research). The results of the research of the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation of North Sumatra Regional Police in handling criminal acts spreading hoax, namely by preparing special members of the cyber team who are in charge of overseeing social media accounts that are suspected of spreading hoaxes, receive every report reported by the public which will later be investigated by the investigator. The police must be even more extra in suppressing the crime rate against the hoax, because this news has caused readers to misunderstand and even lead to commotion. Of course, in handling criminal acts spreading hoax, there must be constraints or obstacles, the inhibiting factor is the number of fake accounts that are very difficult to track their presence by the cyber team, incomplete data from account ownership and reporters in general do not include The link in the account makes it difficult for investigators to find the whereabouts of the perpetrators. For this reason, the police must be able to overcome this matter in various ways, one of which is by cooperating with other agencies to assist in investigating the crime of spreading hoax. So that in the future this Criminal News Dissemination (Hoax) Act can be reduced
