For planning purposes, it is assumed that one-fifth to one-fourth of the total water extracted will be lost before it reaches the rice fields. This loss is caused by the exploitation of evaporation and seepage. Losses due to evaporation and seepage are generally only small compared to the total loss due to exploitation activities. Seepage calculations are only carried out if the soil clearance is high enough. The use of water should be made as efficient as possible, especially for areas with limited water availability.en_US
