The increasing intensity of smartphone use has influenced student behavior and lifestyle by following existing trends, which often unconsciously leads to ignoring others or the surrounding environment. This phenomenon is called phubbing, which refers to the act of hurting a conversation partner by excessively using a smartphone. This study aimed to determine the effect and the extent of the effect of smartphone usage intensity on the phubbing behavior of Communication Science students at Universitas Medan Area. The study employed the media dependency theory, which states that the more a person depends on a medium to fulfill their needs, the more important that medium becomes to them. The method used was descriptive quantitative with purposive sampling technique. The data analysis results revealed that the intensity of smartphone usage influenced the phubbing behavior of Communication Science students (classes of 2020–2023) at Universitas Medan Area by 49.2%. Simple linear regression results showed that the t-value was 9.082, while the t-table value was 1.988. Since t-value > t-table (9.082 > 1.988), it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. | en_US |
