Abstract: | Etnik Karo merupakan salah satu etnik besar di-Provinsi Sumatera Utara, bahkan salah satu kabupaten yang ada di-Sumatera Utara disebut Kabupaten Karo. The Karo ethnic group is one of the major ethnic groups in North Sumatra Province, and one of the districts in North Sumatra is named Karo Regency. The Karo ethnic group is divided into five clans: Karo-karo, Ginting, Tarigan, Sembiring, and Perangin-angin. Ertutur is a method used to establish relationships among Karo students, and the behaviors and interactions of Karo students within Rakut Sitelu are used to identify perceptions and communication barriers in Ertutur. This study aims to understand the perceptions of Karo students and the ethics of Ertutur within the kinship system (Rakut Sitelu) among Karo students at POLMED. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with informant selection using purposive sampling followed by snowball sampling, which involves recommendations from initial informants to identify other informants. The results indicate that Karo students at POLMED practice the tradition of Ertutur when first meeting, but on average, they have a limited understanding of Rakut Sitelu. The barriers identified include the living environment and a lack of concern among Karo students for Karo cultural customs, with parents playing an important role in teaching their children about the kinship system, especially Rakut Sitelu. |
