Indonesia is one of the largest raw sugar importing countries in the world due to the imbalance between national sugar production and consumption. This study aims to analyze the development of Indonesia's raw sugar imports for the period 2012–2023 and identify factors that influence the volume of raw sugar imports from major exporting countries. The method used in this study is the Gravity Model with a panel data approach, using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) to estimate the relationship between the variables studied. The independent variables used include local sugar production, imported raw sugar prices, international sugar prices, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), economic distance, and exchange rates. The estimation results show that local sugar production has a negative and significant relationship with the volume of raw sugar imports, while real GDP has a positive and significant effect. Meanwhile, international sugar prices have a significant negative effect, indicating that increasing global prices can suppress imports. On the other hand, the variables of imported raw sugar prices, economic distance, and exchange rates do not have a significant effect on the volume of raw sugar imports. The implications of the results of this study indicate that the policy of increasing domestic sugar production has not been effective in reducing dependence on imports, and increasing economic growth has actually driven an increase in demand for raw sugar. Therefore, a more comprehensive trade policy is needed, including optimization of domestic sugar production infrastructure and evaluation of trade regulations to reduce dependence on imports. | en_US |
