This study focuses on the psychological dynamics influencing the emergence of bullying behavior among adolescents, particularly through the roles of conformity and critical thinking ability. The main objective of this research is to analyze the extent to which conformity affects bullying behavior and to examine whether critical thinking ability functions as a moderating variable in this relationship. The study involved 117 students from Budi Agung Senior High School in Medan, selected using a cluster random sampling technique, ensuring that the sample was representative of the target population. Data were collected through three primary instruments: a conformity scale, a bullying behavior scale, and a critical thinking scale, which were subsequently analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), a statistical method that enables comprehensive testing of causal relationships. The findings revealed several key results. First, conformity had a positive and significant effect on bullying behavior, with T-Statistics = 9.849 and P-Values = 0.000, indicating that the hypothesis was accepted. This suggests that the higher the tendency of students to conform to peer pressure, the greater their likelihood of engaging in bullying behavior. Second, conformity had a negative and significant effect on critical thinking ability, with T-Statistics = 3.655 and P-Values = 0.000, implying that higher conformity corresponds to lower levels of critical thinking. Third, the results indicated that critical thinking ability had a negative and significant effect on bullying behavior, meaning that students with stronger critical thinking skills were more capable of resisting involvement in deviant behaviors such as bullying. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated that critical thinking significantly mediated the relationship between conformity and bullying behavior, with T-Statistics = 2.520 and P-Values = 0.012, thus supporting the mediation hypothesis. In terms of variable contributions, the R-Square value for critical thinking was 0.448, indicating that conformity explained approximately 44.8% of the variance in critical thinking. Meanwhile, the R-Square value for bullying behavior was 0.667, suggesting that conformity and critical thinking together explained 66.7% of the variance in bullying behavior. Additionally, the Q-Square values for critical thinking (0.101) and bullying behavior (0.505), both greater than zero, further confirmed the predictive relevance of the research model. Overall, these findings emphasize that conformity plays a significant role in fostering bullying behavior, yet this influence can be mitigated by enhancing students’ critical thinking abilityconformity pressures as preventive strategies against bullying in school settings |
