This study aims to understand the underlying factors that contribute to cybersexual behavior among individuals in the emerging adulthood phase, with a particular focus on the experience of loneliness as a primary driving factor. Using a qualitative approach and case study design, the research involved three respondents aged 19–24 who were consciously engaged in cybersexual activities such as pornography consumption, masturbation, and online sexual interactions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the cybersexual behaviors observed were not solely driven by sexual desire, but rather influenced by five major factors: (1) Emotional and social loneliness, (2) The influence of social media and technology, (3) Psychological aspects such as trauma and emotional dysregulation, (4) Unstable interpersonal relationships, and (5) The need for identity and sexual exploration during the transition into young adulthood. These behaviors largely functioned as a means of emotional escape and a coping mechanism for unmet emotional needs in real-life contexts. The study reveals that cybersexual activity often serves as an outlet for emotional deprivation, a way to escape psychological pressure, and a compensatory mechanism for insecure past relationships. The uncertainty and identity struggles that characterize emerging adulthood further exacerbate vulnerability to such compulsive behaviors. This research provides insight into how cybersexual behavior was often rooted in issues related to affection, relational patterns, and identity formation. A holistic approach was needed to address this phenomenon from both psychological and social perspectives. |
