This study aims to analyze the interpersonal communication strategies employed by students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Medan Area in managing conflicts within romantic relationships. The research focuses on two primary types of conflict: those involving violence and those stemming from interfaith differences. William Schutz’s FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation) theory serves as the analytical framework, emphasizing three key dimensions of interpersonal communication: inclusion (the need to be involved), control (the need to influence), and affection (the need to give and receive love). This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with five primary informants who had experienced romantic relationship conflicts and two supporting informants. The findings reveal that communication strategies in violent relationships tend to be reactive, emotional, and imbalanced particularly in the dimensions of control and affection. In contrast, communication strategies in interfaith relationships are more preventive, rational, and cooperative. In such cases, the three FIRO dimensions are fulfilled more healthily through open dialogue and mutual respect. This study concludes that the ability to manage romantic conflicts effectively is closely tied to individuals’ awareness of their interpersonal needs and their capacity to maintain open, equal, and empathetic communication. Schutz’s FIRO theory proves to be a relevant framework for understanding the dynamics of interpersonal communication among students in the context of relational conflict. | en_US |
