This study investigates how picture-based literacy learning impacts the reading skills of first-grade students at SDS Muhammadiyah 19 Medan. Due to the monotony of conventional methods, low interest and reading ability are the main problems underlying the research. Picture stories were chosen because they combine text and visuals, making them more engaging and easier for students to understand. This research is based on Visual Communication Theory, which emphasizes that visual presentation allows for better information reception. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that students' motivation, enthusiasm, and comprehension in reading were improved through picture-based learning. Teachers assessed that this medium helped students understand the flow and content of the text better than previous methods. Positive responses from teachers and students indicate that picture stories can be a practical and enjoyable way to improve literacy in elementary schools.en_US
