This study aims to analyze the meaning of the song lyrics Wish You Were Here popularized by Neck Deep using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The song was chosen due to its profound emotional expression of loss and longing, reflecting a universal human experience of grief. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which includes three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that the song’s lyrics convey not only a literal sense of loss, but also express emotional conflict, guilt, nostalgia, and resistance to common social narratives about death. Through myth analysis, the song is found to construct symbolic values of eternal love and the role of memory as an emotional anchor. The music further serves as a medium of emotional and collective communication, bridging personal experiences with broader social sentiments. Thus, Wish You Were Here is not only a musical work but also a cultural text rich in meaning and relevant to the study of mass communication and popular culture. | en_US |
