This study analyzes the concept of cultural determinism in the series Emily in Paris using the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. The focus of the research is to examine how the actions of the main character, Emily, are influenced by the social and cultural conditions she experiences while living and working in Paris. The method used is qualitative, with data collected through visual observation of scenes in the series and documentation, as well as source triangulation through interviews with expert informants. The findings reveal four scenes that highlight instances of determinism affecting Emily, including misunderstandings of the floor numbering system, value conflicts in the workplace, and the decision to take French language classes. Intercultural communication barriers such as language differences, value discrepancies, and social prejudice serve as key triggers for Emily’s behavioral changes. The phenomena experienced by Emily reflect cultural determinism in a sociological context, where culture shapes an individual's way of thinking, acting, and communicating. This study affirms that the series is not merely a source of entertainment but also a tangible reflection of cross-cultural communication dynamics and how determinism influences individual behavior in new environments. | en_US |
