The development of the manufacturing and material industries, particularly in machine components, cutting tools, and wear-resistant coatings that are often subjected to high stress, requires an understanding of the fracture mechanisms of ceramic materials to aid in the development of new materials with better resistance to dynamic loads. This study aims to fabricate disc-shaped ceramic specimens for dynamic load testing and analyze the fractures that occur in the material due to dynamic loading. The method used is an experimental approach, where each step is conducted to examine the fracture behavior in the specimens. The testing was performed to observe crack patterns, crack propagation mechanisms, and material failure characteristics. The ceramic disc specimens have a U-notch in the center with notch length variations of 15 mm, 17.5 mm, and 20 mm, which were tested under dynamic loads to determine the effect of stress concentration around the notch on crack initiation and propagation. The results indicate that fractures occur around the notch area, with crack initiation starting at the notch tip. The crack propagation pattern is highly dependent on the applied load level and the mechanical properties of the material. | en_US |
