Maternity care services in Indonesia are still predominantly shaped by conventional medical approaches that emphasize physical procedures while often overlooking the psychological comfort and emotional well-being of mothers. This situation has contributed to an increasing risk of psychological issues, such as baby blues syndrome, particularly in urban areas like Medan. Therefore, an alternative approach is needed in designing birthing facilities that are more human-centered, holistic, and supportive of natural healing processes. This proposal presents the design of a Birth Care Center in Medan City through the application of biophilic architecture, a design concept that integrates natural elements into the built environment to create spaces that are healthier, more comfortable, and emotionally restorative. The design method used is descriptive qualitative, involving data collection through literature review, site analysis, and comparative studies of similar international projects such as Mizmedi Dear’one in South Korea and Aiyue Postpartum Care Center in China. The analysis reveals that biophilic principles such as natural lighting, cross ventilation, integrated vegetation, visual connections to nature, and the use of natural materials—have significant impacts on reducing stress, enhancing relaxation, and accelerating postpartum recovery. The spatial program is carefully developed based on the needs of users and local cultural characteristics, including the addition of specific spaces such as prayer rooms, psychological counseling areas, and nutrition education rooms. This design aims to address the limitations of conventional birthing facilities in Indonesia by offering a model for a more emotionally responsive, sustainable, and contextually sensitive maternal healthcare environmen | en_US |
