This study is an in-depth exploration of students' struggles in facing peer pressure within the school environment. Various pressures, such as consumerist demands, cheating behavior, and gossip, are not merely social issues but severe tests that brutally threaten students' authenticity and true identity. The research aims to analyze the internal experiences of peer pressure and identify selfregulation strategies in students. The study was conducted qualitatively using an interpretive phenomenology approach, involving five (5) respondents (R1-R5) through in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that peer pressure triggers five (5) internal processes that are universally experienced by all respondents, though with varying focuses. These five experiences are: (1) Identity and Affiliation Conflict, which emerged as the prominent inner struggle for R1 and R3; (2) Threat to Value Integrity, which became the primary focus of difficulty for R2, R4, and R5 in maintaining honesty; (3) Self-Evaluation as a crucial reflection phase utilized by all respondents; (4) Cognitive Fatigue, which was predominantly observed in R2 and R5 due to high social risk analysis; and (5) Coping Stress Needs as an adaptive drive managed through various efforts by all respondents. In response, four self-regulation strategies were found to be implemented by all respondents, yet with differing emphasis. Value and Self-Principle Strategy served as the fundamental foundation for R1, R2, and R5 in maintaining moral integrity. Meanwhile, Motivational Strategy (goal setting and self-talk) was used by R3 as the primary focus for self-distraction. Behaviorally, Assertive Communication Strategy was used by all respondents, but R1 and R4 favored subtle refusal, contrasted with the more resolute approach of R2 and R5. Finally, Time and Stress Management Strategy was implemented proactively by all respondents to control their environment. It is concluded that effective self-regulation is achieved through the strategic integration of cognitive assertion of values and flexible behavioral adaptation. With this, true student courage lies in the painful awareness of managing oneself. Ambition without a strong foundation of principles will be fragile and easily swept away, whereas principles without strong motivational drive risk trapping an individual in stagnation. This research is expected to inspire every individual to build a strong character to achieve a brilliant future with heads held high. |
