Documentary films as visual communication media play an important role in framing environmental issues and building public awareness regarding the threat of plastic pollution to ecosystems and human health. This study aims to analyze the framing of environmental messages in the film Pulau Plastik using the framing model of William A. Gamson and Andre Modigliani. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through the analysis of dialogue, narration, and visual elements of the film. The findings reveal that the film systematically employs framing devices and reasoning devices to construct plastic pollution as a structural crisis interconnected with environmental degradation, human health, ecological justice, and collective responsibility. Through the use of metaphors, slogans, scientific data, and investigative visuals, the film frames the root causes, moral principles, and long-term consequences of the plastic crisis. Validation results through triangulation with viewer informants and expert triangulators indicate that the framing effectively shaped audience understanding of the urgency of the plastic crisis as a systemic issue, rather than merely a matter of individual behavior. Within the perspective of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's Social Construction of Reality Theory, the film plays a role in constructing the social reality of the "plastic crisis" as an emergency condition that demands attitudinal change and collective action. Accordingly, this documentary film functions not only as an informational medium, but also as an environmental advocacy medium that shapes ethical awareness and public health consciousness. | en_US |
