This research aims to analyze the representation of postpartum depression in relation to patriarchal culture, as well as to examine the forms of socio-cultural patriarchal pressures represented toward the main character in the film Kim Ji- young, Born 1982. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which includes the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth, and is supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to understand how social messages are constructed through film as a medium. The findings indicate that postpartum depression is represented not merely as an individual psychological disorder, but as a mental response to socio-cultural patriarchal pressures experienced by the character Kim Ji Young from childhood through motherhood. The representation of postpartum depression is depicted through behavioral changes, emotional expressions, identity dissociation, physical and mental exhaustion, feelings of loss of self. The forms of socio-cultural patriarchal pressure identified in the film include patriarchy in domestic labor, patriarchy in the workplace, patriarchal culture within the family, and patriarchy in sexuality. This study concludes that postpartum depression cannot be separated from its socio-cultural context and demonstrates that film can function as a medium of social critique against the patriarchal system. | en_US |
