Theatrical performances not only serve as entertainment but also as a communication medium that conveys social, cultural, and emotional messages through visual symbols. This study focuses on the analysis of visual communication elements in the Kopi Susu theatrical performance by Teaterlapan at SMKN 8 Medan using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation. Research informants consisted of the person in charge, the director, the actors, and the audience of the performance. The results show that the dominant visual communication elements in the performance include stage design, costumes, lighting, props, and actors' expressions. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, three layers of meaning were found: denotative, connotative, and mythical. At the denotative level, visual elements function as literal representations of the scene. At the connotative level, these elements reflect the emotions, cultural values, and social experiences of the audience. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, the performance presents ideologies about everyday life, togetherness, and social criticism that are relevant to contemporary reality. This research is expected to provide academic contributions in the development of visual communication studies as well as being a practical reference for theater artists in designing more communicative and meaningful performances.
