| Abstract: | Penelitian ini berjudul “Perilaku Komunikasi Toxic Friendship Pada Mahasiswa Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik Universitas Medan Area”. This research is titled “Communication Behavior of Toxic Friendship Among Students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Medan Area.” The background of this study stems from the phenomenon of unhealthy friendships among students, which often lead to psychological pressure, decreased self-confidence and obstacles in social interaction within the campus environment. This issue is crucial because the communication dynamics in toxic relationships are often hidden behind everyday formal interactions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of communication behavior in toxic friendships and to identify the strategies used by students to control the dynamics of these relationships through social distance regulation. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including participant observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation studies. Informants were determined using a purposive sampling technique, specifically Communication Science students at FISIP who have experienced intensive interaction within toxic friendships. Data analysis was conducted using Erving Goffman's Theory of Impression Management. The results indicate that toxic friendship communication behavior manifests through information manipulation, passive-aggressive behavior, and a lack of behavioral synchronicity between the front stage and back stage. Student efforts to manage the impact of these relationships are carried out through systematic interaction distance management strategies, such as restricting access to private information, reducing the intensity of both verbal and non-verbal communication, and total withdrawal from social environments deemed non-constructive. This research is expected to provide a significant academic contribution to the development of social communication studies, particularly regarding interpersonal relationship management and conflict resolution in academic settings. |
