This study aims to determine the differences in self-control in terms of gender in adolescents who have a tendency to be addicted to online games at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 1 Medan. This study uses a comparative quantitative approach. The research subjects numbered 166 students consisting of 58 male adolescents and 108 female adolescents with an age range of 14–18 years. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with subject selection based on certain criteria that have been determined by the researcher. Data collection was carried out using a self control scale and an online game addiction scale arranged in the form of a Likert scale. The data obtained were analyzed through validity and reliability tests to ensure the feasibility of the research instrument, as well as assumption tests. The results of the normality test showed that the data were not normally distributed, so hypothesis testing was carried out using the nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test with the help of the JASP application. The analysis results showed that there were significant differences in self-control based on gender (p = 0.011 < 0.05), where female adolescents had a better level of self-control (M = 90.46) compared to male adolescents (M = 70.54). In addition, the results of the study also showed a significant difference in the level of online game addiction based on gender (p < 0.001), with male adolescents having a higher level of online game addiction (M = 102.11) compared to female adolescents (M = 73.50). The results of this study confirm that gender factors play a role in differences in self-control and tendencies towards online game addiction in adolescents. Therefore, increasing self-control abilities needs to be given attention in efforts to prevent addictive online game behavior in adolescents, especially in the school environment. |
