The development of modern science and technology not only brings progress, but also creates ethical dilemmas, especially in the practice of scientific experiments. The issue of scientific ethics is now not only discussed in the academic realm, but also represented through popular media, one of which is the anime One Piece. This study aims to analyze the representation of scientific ethics in Dr. Vegapunk's experiment in One Piece episode 1101 using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis technique which includes denotation, connotation, and myth. The object of the research is focused on the scientific experiment scene conducted by Dr.Vegapunk, especially the creation of Seraphim as an artificial human. Data were obtained through observation of the anime's visual and narrative texts and supported by documentation studies and data triangulation. The results show that Dr. Vegapunk's experiment is denotatively represented as an extraordinary scientific advancement. Connotatively, the experiment contains the meaning of exploitation and neglect of human values. At the myth level, this anime builds the view that scientific advancement can justify ethical violations in the name of power and security. This study confirms that One Piece episode 1101 serves as a medium for critical reflection on scientific ethics in popular culture. |
