The rapid development of information and communication technology has transformed media consumption patterns among the public, including academics. One major shift is the migration of print newspaper readers to online media. This study aims to explore this phenomenon among lecturers in the Communication Studies Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Medan Area (UMA) and describe how they adopt news in digital media. This research used a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods through in-depth interviews and observation. The results show that the majority of lecturers have completely shifted from print newspapers to online media in the past five years. The main factors driving this migration are speed of access, ease of use of digital devices, time efficiency, lower costs, and flexibility in selecting news topics. However, challenges that arise include the abundance of unverified information, sensational news, and the risk of information overload. Lecturers are not merely passive readers but also active, critical users who cross-verify news sources and integrate online news into learning materials. This phenomenon demonstrates that the shift to digital media is not merely technical but also influences the culture of academic literacy in the era of media convergence. |
