Salient practices of halal management in Southeast Asia a systematic literature review

Abstract

Purpose – This paper aims to elaborate and discuss halal management practices through a research database named Scopus in three Muslim emerging countries: Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a systematic literature review with a comparison of figures and reports on the three countries. A systematic literature review (SLR) of, Scopus which includes publishers of Emerald, Taylor & Francis and Science Direct databases guided by PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review andMeta Analyses). Findings – Initiatives and progress of halal management practices in each country are elaborated. Eight categories of halal management practices are segregated based on the authors’ contributions and chronologies of research have been done by each author. The research on halal management practices has been done with various interests among researchers globally since 2008. It is shown that the research on halal management practices is extendable to other settings. Every reputable university and respective author has contributed tremendously to publications on the mentioned topic. Originality/value – These results give valuable information and insights for future research in mapping out a more comprehensive framework mainly on halal management practices.
