The Pangkalan Susu Steam Power Plant (PLTU) is a facility that plays a vital role in supplying electrical energy, particularly to the Northern Sumatra region. It utilizes coal as its primary energy source; consequently, the continuity of power generation relies heavily on the performance of the coal handling and combustion ash handling systems. The plant's primary energy system comprises two main subsystems: the coal handling system and the ash handling system. The coal handling system manages coal through various stages—including unloading from ships, transport, and crushing—up to its distribution into bunkers for use as boiler fuel. Meanwhile, the ash handling system manages combustion byproducts—specifically fly ash and bottom ash—to ensure they do not disrupt operations and to maintain compliance with safety and environmental standards.
