Abstract: Penyimpangan konsumsi listrik dari pola normal (penggunaan tidak wajar) merupakan penyebab utama kerugian non-teknis (NTL) yang merugikan penyedia layanan listrik, baik akibat kesalahan pengukuran, gangguan teknis, maupun indikasi penyalahgunaan. Deviation of electricity consumption from normal patterns (abnormal usage) is a major contributor to non technical losses (NTL) that harm utility providers, whether caused by metering errors, technical faults, or indications of misuse. This study analyzes the performance of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm in classifying electricity usage into normal and abnormal categories using a real world dataset of 10,800 smart meter records from 360 customers across three regions in Kerala, India, over a 30 day period. Three SVM kernel functions linear, radial basis function (RBF), and polynomial were evaluated under two feature scenarios: a full feature scenario (including consumption deviation from expected values) and a contextual feature scenario (excluding deviation information, using only household and environmental characteristics). Data preprocessing included missingvalue handling, reconstruction of energy values using mathematical relationships between variables, categorical encoding, feature standardization, and an 80:20 stratified train test split. Hyperparameters were optimized through grid search with stratified k-fold crossvalidation. Results show that under the full feature scenario, the RBF kernel achieved the best performance with 91.34% accuracy, 97.27% precision, 82.59% recall, 89.33% F1-score, and an AUC of 0.934, outperforming the linear and polynomial kernels. Under the contextual-feature scenario without deviation information, performance dropped substantially across all kernels (best accuracy 63.47% with RBF), indicating that consumption-deviation features are the primary driver of anomaly detection, while household demographic and environmental characteristics have far more limited predictive power. These findings align with prior studies reporting the superiority of the RBF kernel in SVM based electricity theft/anomaly detection. The study concludes that SVM with an RBF kernel is an effective method for classifying abnormal electricity usage when deviation features are available, though its performance strongly depends on the quality and relevance of the input features.
