Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a major food commodity consumed by most of the world's population, including Indonesia. Anthropogenic activities such as transportation and the use of agricultural chemicals around roadside rice fields can cause the accumulation of heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), which have the potential to reduce soil quality, crop yields, and human health. This study aims to (1) determine the impact of the accumulation of heavy metals Pb and Cd on the quality of roadside rice fields in Serdang Bedagai Regency, and (2) identify environmental and anthropogenic factors that influence the distribution and absorption of heavy metals in rice plants. The study was conducted from December 2024 to February 2025 using a quantitative descriptive method. Soil and plant samples were taken from four locations, namely Kebun Melati, Pematang Ganjang, Sei Bamban, and Sei Buluh, at distances of 10 m, 50 m, and 100 m from the roadside. Analysis of Pb and Cd levels was carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The study results showed the highest Pb levels, exceeding 60 mg/kg and Cd levels exceeding 3.5 mg/kg, at the Kebun Melati and Pematang Ganjang locations. Based on the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's (KLHK) classification, Pb levels are classified as low to moderate, while Cd levels are moderate to high. Heavy metal accumulation is influenced by pH, organic matter, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers.
