This research aimed to examine the corelation between social support and thesis- writing motivation among final-year undergraduate students. The background of this research is based on the phenomenon of declining student motivation in completing their final project, which is presumed to be influenced by the level of social support they receive. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population consisted of 84 final-year students selected through accidental sampling. Descriptive analysis indicated that the average scores of social support and thesis motivation were in the moderate category. The content validity test of the 20 instrument items showed that all items were valid (V ≥ 0.8), while the reliability test demonstrated good internal consistency for both variables, namely social support (α = 0.777) and thesis motivation (α = 0.712). The assumption test revealed that the social support data were normally distributed, whereas the thesis motivation data were not; therefore, hypothesis testing was conducted using Spearman correlation. The correlation analysis yielded a rho coefficient of 0.164 with p = 0.136, indicating a very weak and non- significant relationship between social support and thesis motivation. Nevertheless, regression analysis showed that social support accounted for 6.7% of the variance in thesis motivation (R² = 0.067; p = 0.017). Data categorization revealed that the majority of students (86%) had a moderate level of motivation and 14% had a high level of motivation. This study concluded that social support has not been a dominant factor in increasing the motivation of final-year students, so internal factors likely play a greater role in determining the motivation to complete a thesis. |
