The development of digital communication has transformed long-distance family interaction, particularly among migrant university students who live apart from their parents. Video calls function not only as a communication tool but also as a space for self-disclosure within interpersonal relationships. This qualitative descriptive study involved in-depth interviews with five migrant students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Medan Area. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, supported by source triangulation. The findings indicate that students’ self-disclosure toward their parents is selective and controlled. Information that may cause parental concern is often filtered as a form of emotional consideration. Video calls play a significant role in maintaining emotional closeness by providing direct visual and verbal interaction that enhances a sense of presence and support. In this context, the meaning of self-disclosure reflects emotional maturity in managing openness to preserve harmonious long-distance family relationships. |
